The main Xero alternatives for UK small businesses are QuickBooks, Sage, FreeAgent, Zoho Books and Bizzle. Which is right depends on whether you need better accounting software or something that also handles the admin around it.

Usually one of three reasons: the price has moved, the product does more than the business needs, or the thing that actually costs time is not the accounting at all. The third is the one worth pausing on — swapping one ledger for another does not help if the problem is an unanswered phone and unchased invoices.
Below is an honest list, including where Xero is still the right answer.

Write down where the hours actually go for a fortnight. If most of them are in the ledger, a different accounting product may help. If most are in chasing, filing and answering the phone, a different ledger will change nothing.
Then compare the whole stack cost rather than the headline subscription — the add-ons are usually where the money is.

Only if something is actually costing you. Xero is good software with an accountant on every corner, and moving a ledger is a day's work plus a parallel month. If the books are fine and the pain is elsewhere, look at what sits around the books rather than replacing them.
QuickBooks. Comparable depth, a similar accountant network and the same category of product. If what you want is Xero with a different interface or pricing shape, that is the one to trial first; the others are each a different shape of product.
