Asked at the
right moment.

Automatic review requests ask a customer for a review shortly after the job is completed and paid, when satisfaction is highest. Timing matters more than wording: a request sent days later gets a fraction of the response of one sent while the work is fresh.

Why timing beats persuasion

The moment a customer is most likely to leave a positive review is immediately after the problem is solved and the payment has gone through. A day later they are back at work; a week later the job is a memory.

Most small businesses ask rarely and inconsistently, usually when they remember or when they suspect the answer will be good. Asking every satisfied customer, automatically, changes the volume more than any wording ever will.

Doing it without being a nuisance

  • Trigger on completion and payment, not on invoice raised — asking before you have been paid is the wrong order.
  • Ask once, with one clear link, and do not chase a review the way you would chase an invoice.
  • Exclude jobs that went badly. Automation should not walk into a complaint asking for five stars.
  • Keep it short and recognisably from you rather than from a marketing system.

Replying matters as much as receiving

Public replies to reviews — particularly critical ones — are read by prospective customers deciding whether to call you. A calm, specific reply to a complaint often reads better than the complaint itself.

Drafted replies go out on brand and in your tone, and you approve them before anything is published.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions people ask.

Which review platforms are supported?

Google is where most small business discovery actually happens, and it is the primary target. Others can be linked, though for a local trade Google is where the effort belongs.

Is it legal to ask for reviews?

Asking is fine. Incentivising, filtering out likely negatives before asking, or writing them yourself is not, and platforms penalise it heavily when they detect it.

What about a customer who was unhappy?

Exclude the job and deal with the complaint directly. A review request is not a way to avoid a difficult conversation, and it usually makes one worse.

Can I see the request before it goes?

Yes. Set the wording once and it goes out that way, or require approval per job if you would rather. Most people approve the first few and then let it run.
